Hosted by Al Schmitt and Ed Cherney, the first Surround Music Awards (SMAs), held at the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel on December 13, 2002, handed out awards in 15 categories to recognize the best projects and engineers in the surround industry. Elliot Scheiner took home the first Surround Pioneer Award for his support and early contributions to the format, as well as his work on the 5.1 versions of The Eagles' Hotel California and Hell Freezes Over, and Queen's A Night at the Opera. Best of Show:
Nitty Gritty Surround (John McEuen, Jimmy Ibbotson, Jennifer Warnes; AIX Records); also took home Best Additional Features.
Best Mix: Non-Orchestral: Ziroq (Ziroq; Silverline Records)
Most Adventurous Mix [Tie]:
A Night at the Opera (Queen; DTS Entertainment) and Headhunters (Herbie Hancock; Sony Legacy). A Night at the Opera also won Listener's Choice Award.
Top Surround Artist of the Year: Graham Nash, Songs for Survivors (DTS Entertainment).
